The choreographer Marion Motin challenges our contemporary egocentrism and the outsized attention we pay to our appearances. With its play on reflections, sequins, and mirrors, Narcissus reflects both the light around us and our very era.
We look at ourselves, we scroll, and we scrutinise things more than ever, but do we really see ourselves? Marion Motin’s new work explores this gap between image and substance, and between appearances and feelings. On a stage that resembles a hall of mirrors, five performers challenge the image they have of themselves by slipping into the shoes of iconic stars who only reveal a surface. Their bodies, covered in glittery substances or shimmering garments, are caught under the spotlight in a vain, narcissistic wandering. Narcissus marks Marion Motin’s return to La Villette after the success of Grand Sot, which she performed in December 2021. For the last ten years, La Villette has supported the work of this choreographer who comes from the world of hip-hop, and who has worked with Stromae, Christine and the Queens, and Madonna.
