A 2025 Creation

At once an initiation tale and a fable, The Friend puts spectators in the shoes of a child in search of discoveries that are as joyous as they are mysterious. Seated in the middle of an immersive visual and musical arrangement, the audience is the witness and protagonist of this story.

Under the cover of night, a bat spirits a sleeping child away on a great adventure to meet marvellous creatures and worlds. The Friend is a child’s initiatory journey through imaginary landscapes, where it discovers new ways of thinking and unusual friendships. The child may be dreaming all this up, or it may be that it really is travelling through fantastic places in pursuit of its joys and to conquer its fears. It is an invitation to venture off the beaten path, to play outside the rules of these known spaces, and to look “past the edge of the world”. The Friend is also the encounter of two stage directors and an artist duo, Icinori, whose universe of drawings stem from the confluence of Western and Japanese cultures. By means of a small, mobile puppet theatre, the drawn images come to life on large panels located all around the audience, thus immersing everyone in the drawings and in a world of sound and poetry.
