A 2025 Creation

Performed on stage in a concert format for the first time ever in France, Gypsy is a masterpiece by the titans of Broadway musical comedy Jule Styne and Stephen Sondheim, a fable about the sad fate of a mother devoured by her dreams of celebrity, portrayed by the soprano Natalie Dessay.

In the late 1920s, the Great Depression struck the United States as Rose and her two daughters travel across the United States performing their vaudeville act. The mother wants her young children to become music hall stars, but times and public tastes are changing, and burlesque is becoming increasingly popular. And the two girls have their own ambitions, soon isolating their mother. Based on the biography of Gypsy Rose Lee, the famous striptease, this musical fable features Jule Styne’s jazzy score and Stephen Sondheim’s funny, bittersweet lyrics. Director Laurent Pelly, a major figure in opera and theatre who has already worked in musical comedy, entrusted Natalie Dessay with the sublime, tragic role of this mother overcome by her irresistible desire for fame as she crashes into reality at a pivotal moment in the history of modern entertainment.
