These two pieces teem with euphoria and ecstasy, making for a very exciting programme. Portuguese choreographer Marco da Silva Ferreira explores a form of collective trance inspired by folia, a rural folkloric dance that gave sixteenth century shepherds an escape from their social conventions. It lies at the origin of a theme that has run through the history of music, for which the Baroque composer Arcangelo Corelli wrote a variation, and which has been revisited here using synthesisers. This creates a mirroring between traditional Portuguese festivals and the dance of our time. Maud Le Pladec envisioned Static Shot as a cinematographic shot lasting some thirty minutes, in which movement and gaze never stop. On stage, bodies and sounds converge towards a permanent climax. Dancing to the 130 beats per minute of the music written by DJ Chloé and Pete Harden, the group moves together and reconstitutes itself constantly in this hypnotising pop choreography.
