Appearances, disappearances, and levitations – They Say I’ve Grown Up uses the ingeniousness and poetry of new magic to delve deep into the heart of a psychiatric hospital at the turn of the last century.

In 1896, a mysterious patient was admitted to the La Pitié- Salpêtrière Hospital: Madeleine had lived her whole life on edge, claiming to have experienced episodes of levitation. Shemet a physician who took on unusual cases that he hoped to cure using hypnosis. For this new work for her company 14:20, pioneers of new magic, Valentine Losseau drew inspiration from a dark chapter in the history of medicine, when women who were deemed to be hysterical were interned and studied. They Say I’ve Grown Up sheds a spotlight on these women who lived in a society in which their bodies remained under the custody of men. In a surreal, somewhat symbolist ambiance, a new mechanism allows for any of the performers, objects, settings on stage to appear or disappear, instantly or gradually, in full or in part. Leïla Ka, a young artist with a strong reputation, choreographed and performs one of the roles in this work which is at once spectacular, sensitive, and pictorially engaging.
