The artistic collaboration between Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and La Villette ratchets up a notch this season with a revealing title for the project: ICON. For this creation, the choreographer has called again on the Göteborg Opera’s dancers to explore in depth his favorite subject: religions.

The Show

In ICON, the Belgian choreographer questions the strength of symbols that govern our daily lives. “Symbols – human beings are capable of creating them, destroying them, and bringing them back to life,” he notes. ICON is a new stage in a series of explorations around religions and society and their interactions. From Rien de rien to Babel (Words) and Fractus V, Cherkaoui questions our beliefs both sacred and secular.

ICON is also reconnecting with sculptor Antony Gormley (Zero degrees, Sutra, Noetic) and the dancers of the Göteborg Opera who are on stage with Eastman’s performers in Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui’s company.

ICON will henceforth be a mirror extended to every one of us.
