After their successful Làng Tôi show in 2011, the Nouveau Cirque du Vietnam (the new circus of Vietnam) returns to La Villette with À Ô Làng Phô in the Circus Platfom programme. The performers whisk us away to the village of Tuan Le and the Nguyen brothers.

With Làng Tôi, the Nouveau Cirque du Vietnam starts by presenting life in a peaceful Vietnamese village. Then, in the next chapter, Ô Làng Phô shows how serenity can be dashed by social change. An urban electrified ambiance takes over the village and the traditional music of the south, Cai Luong, is soon replaced by hip hop.
Accompanied by five musicians, the Nouveau Cirque du Vietnam continues its variations on bamboo, all the while developing a new and astonishing piece of circus equipment: the basket. Juggling, balancing, contortions, and acrobatic feats are still part of their dazzling array. The audience is treated to a fresco of panels featuring ancient Asian traditions alongside Circassian innovation inspired by our effervescence into a new modern era.

Brothers Nhat Ly and Lan Maurice Nguyen are Frenchmen of Vietnamese stock. They studied circus arts at the Hanoi National Circus. With a bachelor degree in music from the Université de Paris VIII, the first brother, Nhat Ly, founded Scène du Viêtnam in 2008 for staging live performance theatre. After spending a moment at Cirque Plume, the second brother began teaching at the Centre des Arts du Cirque in the city of Chambéry, France. Then, in 2011, La Villette was the last port of call in France for their first show, Lang Toi / Mon village (my village), written for the Cirque National du Viêtnam. Today, it closes the nationwide tour of their second show, À Ô Làng Phô, created in collaboration with the famous Vietnamese choreographer Tan Loc Nguyen. The show premiered at the Festival des Nuits de Fourvière in the city of Lyon, France.
