Presented at the 2016 Festival d’Avignon, Le Pays de Nod is an immersion in the majestic Rubens room at the Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp. The show is all ambience, no text. Once again, director FC Bergman stages individuals struggling with the tragic aspect of their situations.

The play

While all the artwork has clearly been removed from the Rubens room, one piece resists, the Coup de Lance, too large to be taken out the front door. Deprived of its vocation – home to paintings by the Flemish painter – the room might be a Noah’s Ark, a quiet and peaceful refuge from this hectic world. However, this haven of peace is inhabited by characters in the clutches of solitude and absurdity. In this voiceless, mood-setting play, FC Bergman vies with the masters of the art: the mystical naturalism of Romeo Castellucci, the droll melancholy of Christoph Marthaler and the staid energy of Pina Bausch. The astounding show is up to par with its references.
