In Daddy, the stage becomes a video game, a universe in constant flux, where everything is possible, even the worst things. Marion Siéfert has authored a staggering piece about predation by the dominant and about contemporary forms of sexual abuse.
At age 13, Mara escapes the poverty of her everyday life by immersing herself in role plays, video games where dozens of players meet online. There she meets an older man who invites her to join the game Daddy, which seems to bring her dream of living the life of the stars who fascinate her so within reach. But to get there, this young girl has to undergo trials that are increasingly murky and less and less virtual each time, in a world where everything is monetised and can be bought. Just as the production embraces the shifting nature of the video game by unfolding scenes that borrow from musicals and vampire films, things begin to close in on Mara. With an unerring faith in theatre’s ability to deal with contemporary issues, Marion Siéfert explores how the dream machine works for young people who connect to the world via the Internet, but who are left out of its real dynamics. As in The Big Sleep (2018) and _joanof_dark_ (2020), the director sets revolt and childhood against one another.
