For his second work with the new company Benthé, choreographer Théophile Bensusan – trained in hip-hop – explores the malleability of time and the ways in which bodies perceive and transmit it.
The ambition of Doom is to draw the outlines and vibrations of the world using only bodies in movement. It plays on infinite variations of time, which is experienced differently as it flows, depending on the specific place and moment in time. Théophile Bensusan uses this tension to create a typology of our reactions to a given situation. On stage, the composers Floyd Shakim and Nouveau Monica are the timekeepers; their music played live incorporates the world’s pulse and guides the performers’ movements. The bodies become hyper-sensitive to the qualities of time (light, dense, suspended, brief, distended, or silent), and they play a game in which they follow it, precede it, stretch it, slow it down, melt into it, or let it slip away, all in an attempt to escape the inevitable.
