The artists Lafawndah and Trustfall have staged an ancient pre-Sumerian myth in a style that is both experimental and accessible. An immersion in worlds below ground and the creation of the cycle of seasons.
Inanna’s Notebooks is a loose adaptation of one of the oldest Sumerian poems we have, a foundational narrative of the Middle East. A dispute has created distance between Ereshkigal, goddess of the abyss, and her sister Inanna, goddess of fertility and prosperity. Inanna must pass through the seven doorways of the world of the spirits to find Ereshkigal, repair their relationship, and fulfil her destiny of creating a new world.
After more than a decade of involvement in music and the visual arts, Lafawndah and Trustfall explore the contemporary resonances of this fable – in terms of ecology, transformative justice, women’s emancipation – through a performance conceived for and with three actors.
In an atmospheric setting, the lighting sculpts the space, while the performers explore the possible incarnations of this fertile myth in a random manner. Musical composition and choreography intertwine in a spiraling dialogue, combining ancient, contemporary, and invented lyrical imagery.
