Israeli choreographer Ohad Naharin revisits one of his best known works, thirty years after its premiere. An infinite playing field, Anafaza is a vibrant incarnation of dance as a revolt against illusion.
On stage, more than twenty dancers along with three musicians (including Ohad Naharin himself) fuse their energies to reinvent Anaphase, the emblematic work by the Israeli choreographer. In 1993, for the Batsheva Dance Company’s thirtieth anniversary, Ohad Naharin imagined “small sculptures in a large space”. Against the hypnotising rhythms of Iannis Xenakis, Arvo Pärt, and Aaron Copland, Anafaza unfolds in three scenes. Each one targets an illusion to fight: beauty, power, and love. From the collective whirling to the most suggestive duet, the work consolidates the language forged by Ohad Naharin for his company, Gaga. With flexible torsos and limbs, explosions and sudden falls, the style has proved its worth, and Anafaza is its incredible vehicle. This new generation of performers of the Batsheva Dance Company invite us to experience a reinvention of this classic.
