Fuega immerses us in the visual, sensorial journey of a warthog traversing the globe to recount the story of a child who dreams of encountering this animal. By candlelight, as if one were visiting a grotto, the audience is invited to slip into a drawn universe that resembles a film-concert.
Everything is recounted delicately from the child’s perspective, like a distant memory. Fuega the warthog slowly crosses landscapes, sometimes drawn to a smell, a sound, or a colour, but then she travels on. There are no humans in this world, only Fuega facing the elements as she makes various gourmet discoveries. Appearing at times as a drawing and at others as a puppet, the warthog has the gift of ubiquitousness, navigating from hot to cold and from fire to water. The sounds envelop us, the aromas awake us, the story unfolding in bits and pieces, sometimes haltingly, but always edging on the oneiric. Inspired by the Japanese art of Kamishibaï, Sophie Laloy’s spectacle plays out at the intersection of painting, cinema, and object theatre. An ingenious mechanism brings the painted scenes to life. Our perceptions are transformed and a sense of the fantastical kicks in. To all this we must add the music that gives texture to the story, in which natural sounds melding with the instruments.
