Spanish dancer and choreographer Rocío Molina continues her reinvention of flamenco in this bold, free-spirited investigation of desire, a piece conducted together with the singer Niño de Elche.
Through various powerful and poetic tableaus of shifting colours, costumes, music, and combinations between Roció Molina and the performers who surround her, Carnation probes desire from the imagined to the visible, from concealment to revelation. Whether she engages by herself in a hand-tohand combat with a chair or in a duo, or in a contact improvisation with the singer Ninõ de Elche, the other highly talented enfant terrible of the new generation of flamenco, Molina follows a deeply held intuition: the origin and signification of desire are tied to a state that we can only access through our bodies. In this intense flow of gestures ranging from the tender to the violent, worlds intermingle, from the modern to the ancient and from the sacred to the profane, like the electronic and acoustic music accompanying the piece, performed on stage by a violinist and the amateur choir of the Paris Philharmonic. Carnation had its worldwide premiere at the 2022 edition of the Venice Biennale, for which Rocío Molina received the Silver Lion.
